Facebook 3.0 for iPhone/iPod touch: your campus in real-time [nearly]

All Apps Are Up to DateConfession: I’ve kind of been checking the App Store on my iPhone just a little bit too much lately.  The reason?  Like many, I am just itching for the latest edition of Facebook (version 3.0 if you’ve been hiding under a rock) to come out.  It was submitted to Apple for review last week, and since then the iPhone hype mill has been buzzing about when it will actually be approved.

TechCrunch does a great job running down the list of new features that this app will bring to the table.  There’s two that I am particularly interested in: video uploading from the 3GS and access to updating Pages from the iPhone.  This means that mobile uploading from all over campus can be done efficiently and pretty much in real time.  My wheels have been turning on this kind of thing for some time now, and the fact that it’s almost here has me licking my chops.  Imagine:

– Sharing photos and live video from a campus athletic event (maybe the first home game at our new soccer stadium), a speaker on campus, or arts event or concert (as long as you’re not disturbing those around you!)

– Outfitting tour guides or bloggers with a fleet iPod touches (new version likely coming soon with built-in camera) and giving them admin access to post to certain areas of your Facebook Page

Just a couple ideas, but it just goes to show that the app will really affect the way we publish content in higher ed.  We are going to be able to distribute content consistently and in decent quality to major platforms like Facebook.   Something to get excited about, for sure.  What’s your idea for using the new app?  Leave a comment and share.

Oh man that is hysterical, I don’t know how MANY times I have done the same thing on my phone, in anticipation of the new app. That’s hysterical
